Smart, Sustainable, and Chic

Smart, sustainable, and chic are the three core passions that inspired Shana Yansen to start Jute and Jackfruit.  And last month I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Shana and learn more about her company and the Jute and Jackfruit blog.

Jute and Jackfruit is an environmentally and socially conscious clothing online boutique selling limited handmade clothing, jewelry, and handbags.  Here are some of my favorite items from the online boutique.  This is the perfect time to start thinking about holiday gifts right?

I ended up buying the silver and black Masha Messenger Bag.  Here are a few features of this “smart design” bag.
1. It was made from over 1600 recycled aluminum soda pull-tabs, hand crocheted together.
2. Socially-conscious program empowering Brazilian women to gain crochet skills and obtain a source of employment. A portion of sales is donated to community building programs.
3. Made by artisan women in Brazil, fair trade.

Also, from now until November 30th, 2010 you can use the code Naina15 at Jute and Jackfruit to receive 15% off your first order. (clearance items not included)

Reasons to Celebrate

Our Family

just got bigger……

Congratulations to my brother and sister in law on the arrival of their precious baby boy Niam!
Niam is so cute and he is already style’n in an Armani outfit and Ralph Lauren hat from Nordstrom. (and just in case you didn’t get the memo, the Nordstrom half-yearly sale is going on now!)

Have a great weekend and Happy Diwali to my dear friends and family!

Happy Diwali!
Diwali (also known as the “festival of lights” or the “awareness of the inner light”)  teaches us to drive away ignorance and evil (darkness) that engulfs the light of knowledge.  photo credit

Reader Request: Gray and Brown

Gray striped boat neck tee-Loft (30%off), JouJou faux leather jacket-Nordstrom, Stretch denim leggings-C&C California, Boots-Steve Madden, Handbag-Spain
Stephanie (of scrumptious) went out with some friends and she paired up a gray sweater dress, gray sheer tights, and caramel colored knee high boots.  After wearing the outfit Stephanie said she liked the look but she wasn’t sure if it worked or not.  So Stephanie asked me my thoughts on wearing gray and brown together.

My thoughts on Stephanie’s gray/brown outfit:
1. I think neutral colors like brown, black and gray definitely work well together.
2. Another great option is to match the brown boots with brown tights to make the legs look elongated and longer.
3. Tie in the brown boots with the rest of the outfit by adding an accessory that has shades of brown it in. This can be a belt, clutch, or even a chunky bracelet.
4. Consider adding in a third color or a pattern. This can be a cardigan, jacket, or scarf.
5. Most importantly, I think Stephanie’s outfit worked because she liked it and she wore it with confidence!

So I was inspired to put together a similar outfit using these colors but I went into my closet and I realized I don’t have a lot of solid brown and gray items in my closet and I don’t even have a single gray or brown dress.  This is because these colors are not the most flattering on me. However, if I break up these colors in my outfit by adding jeans, a third color such as white or yellow, or even patterns such as stripes, then I can pull off wearing these colors.

I wore the outfit Sunday for a casual get together with our friends for Halloween.  I also brought along this gray cardigan to wear in the house.

Do you wear gray and brown together?

My Top Picks: Sephora

It is Friends and Family at Sephora through November 3rd! This means you can get 20% off your entire order at Sephora right now.  When these types of discounts come around it is a great reminder to replenish favorite items and it is a great excuse to try a couple of new products too.

My Top Beauty Picks From Sephora

1. NARS The Multiple- Orgasm
I have the Multiple in St. Barts and I use it all the time so this time I thought I would try the Multiple in Orgasm. (I use the gloss and blush in orgasm and love them too!)

2. Renee Furturer Naturia Dry Shampoo
I go through this stuff pretty quickly and with upcoming work and holiday travel I decided to order the 12 oz.  and the 24 oz. sizes.

3. Bobbie Brown Corrector
I have dark circles and I have tried many products out there to help with this issue. This corrector is amazing because the peach base really neutralizes my dark circles.  I just replenished my stock of the dark peach corrector at Neiman Marcus so I may hold off on this for now. But this product tops the list as one of my favorite all time beauty essentials.

My eye shadow comes off with cleanser but for the times I need to take it off eyeliner or mascara this product works much better.

5. Bobbie Brown Shimmer Brick-Nectar
I have this eyeshadow/blush combo in Bronze and Rose and it’s the only eyeshadow I own. It is perfect for both day and night looks.  I like this new nectar color palette for the fall/winter and I am debating whether to get this today.

6. Stila All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner
I usually stock up on Lakme liquid eye liner from India but this one by Stila got excellent reviews so I thought I would give it a try. This will be perfect to line the upper eyelids.
What are some of your favorite beauty essentials?

Sequins and the City

Pink sequin skirt-Banana Republic, Roll sleeve henley blouse-Ann Taylor Loft (on sale for 30% off)Peep toe black pumps-Aldo (last season), black patent clutch-Charles David, bracelet-H&M
On Friday night my husband and I met up with our good friends for dinner at Mistral, one of our all time favorite restaurants in Boston.  And as mentioned here, I requested your style ideas about how to create a new look using my pink sequin skirt.

Previous Look
The first time I wore this skirt I paired it up with a black sleeveless chiffon blouse tucked in, black tights, and these black heels.

Current Look
This style is inspired by style’n reader Nikki (Style and Charm)
I like Nikki’s idea to switch up the look by adding a flowy cream blouse, black tights, and black heels.

Next Look
The next time I wear this sequin skirt I am going to go for a daytime look.
Josie (with a wink and a smile) suggests pairing the skirt with a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and Valerie (Red Vines for Breakfast) and Piya suggest creating a look with a pair of tall brown boots.
